McGuire for Senate

ISSUES

My first issue is governance. I believe that above all else, you want to vote for someone that you trust to listen to your concerns and legislate with common sense and integrity. I believe in a smaller more efficient government, that listens to it constituents, and does not ram unwanted legislation down their throats.

I support the right to keep and bear arms. Taking firearms away from citizens does not make them safer. the world over, where tougher gun control regulations have been tried, gun crimes increase in every instance. As Minnesotans we have a very strong hunting and fishing tradition. I want to protect this tradition for our children as well as be able to defend them.

I am an avid outdoorsman, and want a clean environment. An environment which sustains our outdoor traditions and promotes the tourism that is essential for so many Minnesota communities. However, we have a DNR that has become bloated, wasteful, duplicative and abusive. It has been taken over by left wing special interests that have nothing to do with the environment or natural resources. I will work to insure that the DNR becomes an agency that actually protects our resources and environment, without bankrupting and abusing our citizens.

The state and federal governments are spending money in a wasteful manner and at a frightening rate. Government has never spent money as wisely as the taxpayers themselves. It has been proven time and time again, by letting the people and business keep more of what they make, jobs, the economy and the tax base all grow. This is the true way to prosperity for the people, the state and the country. Bailouts and throwing money at problems prop up the unsuccessful at the expense of the productive. At best this only hides the real bottom for a time, and at the worst bankrupts the nation. This debt at both the state and national levels are unsustainable.

Minnesota's economy suffers from a lack of investment in the state by business. I will work to provide a business environment in Minnesota that promotes companies moving into our great state, instead of the bleeding of jobs we now have. Unemployment in Grand Rapids is 15.4%, not counting those who have exhausted benefits or stopped looking. It is unacceptably high throughout Minnesota. We will not gain jobs till we remove the burdensome taxes, regulations and permits that are forcing employers to layoff workers or leave our state.

There are newly discovered mineral deposits in Afghanistan, that may in the long run destroy the mining industry in Minnesota if steps are not taken to make our mines competitive in the world market. The mines Minnesota may be able to open in the future are being blocked by the liberals in the DNR, MPCA, EPA and both houses of our State Legislature. Investors such as PGM Group Metals, and others, have been thwarted at every turn in putting our Iron Range Miners to work. We have some of the largest copper deposits on the planet. We import a full third of our copper. The strategic importance of opening these mines is extremely important. Yet the liberals claim they may pollute the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, despite the fact the mines will not be in that water shed. There is no way to predict when they will be able to write a single paycheck to a miner, while the job stealing mines begin to operate in Afghanistan. This is but a single example of how liberal policies are destroying our economy, shipping jobs overseas, and preventing the reduction of our high unemployment rate.

With the help of the voters of Minnesota's Senate District 3, we can insure our best days are not behind us, but yet to come

Dan Severson, candidate for Secretary of State, and fellow Navy veteran.

In the last elections, less than 25% of the military mail in ballots were counted. I will work with Dan Severson, the next Secretary of State, to insure that this unjust travesty never occurs again.
I have taken the Voter Protection Pledge, which supports all efforts to institute a requirement to show a photo ID to access a ballot in any election for public office. This is an idea the public overwhelmingly approves of, both on the left and the right. An idea the DFL legislature struck down.

Dan McGuire will strive to end the pork in Minnesota's spending. He will support Pat Anderson as State Auditor.
